Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has confirmed a record-breaking theft of approximately $1.46 billion in digital assets from one of its offline Ethereum wallets. The attack, which occurred on Friday, is believed to be the largest crypto heist on record. Bybit disclosed that a highly sophisticated attack resulted in the theft of more than Rs 11,972 crores in digital assets.
The theft targeted an Ethereum cold wallet, involving a manipulation of a transaction from the cold wallet to a warm wallet. This allowed the attacker to gain control and transfer the funds to an unidentified address. The incident highlights the rising trend of cryptocurrency heists, driven by the allure of profits and challenges in tracing such crimes.

The incident is considered the largest crypto theft in history, underscoring the increasing sophistication of cyber threats targeting digital assets.
The Lazarus Group's attack involved compromising a developer's machine associated with Safe Wallet, a multisig wallet platform. By injecting malicious code into a JavaScript file, the attackers manipulated a planned transfer of funds from Bybit's cold wallet to its hot wallet. This allowed them to redirect over 400,000 ETH and stETH, worth approximately $1.5 billion, to an address under their control. The attack exploited vulnerabilities in Bybit's cold wallet management and multi-signature approval systems, highlighting the need for robust cybersecurity measures within the digital asset space.

Ethereum developers are being targeted by a supply chain attack involving malicious npm packages designed to look like legitimate Hardhat plugins. These fake packages, with names closely resembling real ones, are being used to steal sensitive data, including private keys and mnemonics. Researchers have identified at least 20 of these malicious packages, which have collectively been downloaded over 1,000 times. The attack exploits trust in the open-source ecosystem, specifically within the npm registry. Once installed, the malicious packages use Hardhat runtime functions to collect sensitive information and transmit it to attacker-controlled endpoints.
The attackers are using Ethereum smart contracts to store and distribute Command & Control (C2) server addresses, making it more difficult to disrupt their infrastructure. This strategy, combined with using hardcoded keys and Ethereum addresses, enables efficient data exfiltration. The campaign is attributed to a Russian-speaking threat actor known as "_lain." The compromised development environments could lead to backdoors in production systems and significant financial losses for affected developers. Developers are urged to verify package authenticity, inspect source code, and exercise caution when using package names.

A malicious Python package named 'set-utils' has been discovered on the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository. This package is designed to steal Ethereum private keys by exploiting commonly used account creation functions. Disguised as a utility for Python sets, the package mimics popular libraries, tricking developers into installing it. Since its appearance, 'set-utils' has been downloaded over 1,000 times, posing a significant threat to Ethereum users and developers, particularly those working with Python-based wallet management libraries. The Python security team has removed the malicious package from PyPI.
The 'set-utils' package operates by silently modifying standard Ethereum wallet creation functions. The private keys are exfiltrated within blockchain transactions via the Polygon RPC endpoint to resist traditional detection efforts. The stolen keys are encrypted using an attacker-controlled RSA public key before transmission, making detection challenging. Even if the package is uninstalled, any Ethereum wallets created while it was active remain compromised. To mitigate these risks, developers should employ regular dependency audits and automated scanning tools to detect malicious behaviors in third-party packages.
