US authorities have seized over $23 million in cryptocurrency linked to the theft of $150 million from a Ripple crypto wallet in January 2024. Investigators believe hackers who breached LastPass in 2022 were behind the attack. This seizure follows findings published in September 2023 by KrebsOnSecurity, which highlighted a series of six-figure cyberheists stemming from cracked master passwords stolen from LastPass in 2022.

The investigation, which includes collaboration between the U.S. Secret Service and the FBI, supports the conclusion that the attackers used a stolen password from an online password manager account to access and steal funds from the Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen’s crypto wallet. Approximately $24 million was initially frozen by authorities before it could be withdrawn, marking a significant step in recovering the stolen assets. The meticulous tracking of the stolen funds across various cryptocurrency exchanges, including OKX, Kraken, and WhiteBIT, played a crucial role in the recovery efforts.
