Byte Federal, a major Bitcoin ATM operator, has reported a significant data breach impacting approximately 58,000 users. The breach, which occurred on September 30th and discovered on November 18th 2024, resulted from unauthorized access to their systems through a vulnerability in GitLab, a third-party software platform. The compromised data includes names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, email addresses, government-issued ID details including Social Security numbers, transaction histories, and user photographs. Byte Federal has confirmed that no cryptocurrency funds or user assets were compromised.

Byte Federal took immediate action upon discovering the breach, shutting down its platform, isolating affected systems, and performing a hard reset of all customer accounts. They have also implemented additional security measures such as updating passwords, keys, and tokens. An independent cybersecurity firm is conducting a forensic investigation, and the company is cooperating with law enforcement. While there is no evidence the data has been misused at this time, Byte Federal is advising all affected users to reset their passwords immediately and regularly review their accounts.
