PLA AI Distillation of GPT-3.5 and Claude for Autonomous Weaponry
Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) researchers are leveraging "AI distillation" to bypass US export controls on high-end compute hardware and proprietary software. By utilizing API-based interactions with OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and Anthropic’s Claude, the PLA generates high-fidelity synthetic datasets to train smaller, specialized "student" models. These distilled models are deployed on domestic hardware to power autonomous drone navigation, tactical reconnaissance, and battlefield decision-support systems. This technique effectively transfers the reasoning capabilities of frontier LLMs into weaponized end-points, neutralizing traditional sanctions targeting GPU availability and proprietary model weights.
