Ransomware Exploitation of Palo Alto Networks GlobalProtect CVE-2024-3400

Published October 12, 2026

CVE-2024-3400 is a critical command injection vulnerability in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS GlobalProtect gateways. Unauthenticated attackers exploit the flaw by sending crafted HTTP requests containing shell metacharacters (e.g., ;, &, |) within the user or hostname parameters of the GlobalProtect portal. This enables arbitrary OS command execution, facilitating the deployment of ChinaChopper webshells and the UpStyle Python backdoor for persistent command-and-control (C2) communication via reverse TCP tunnels. Weaponized by ransomware affiliates—including LockBit 3.0 and Clop—the exploit chain is used to harvest credentials and encrypt critical systems, resulting in significant impact across healthcare, government, and financial sectors.

  • Vulnerability Mechanics: Command Injection Vector

    • Exploitation occurs via unauthenticated HTTP requests targeting the GlobalProtect portal (e.g., /global-protect/portal/images/).
    • Attackers inject shell metacharacters into the user or hostname parameters to bypass authentication and execute OS commands.
    • Affects PAN-OS versions 10.2.x, 11.0.x, and 11.1.x prior to respective security hotfixes.
    • CVSS 9.8 rating reflects the high criticality of unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE).
  • Exploitation & Payloads: Persistence and C2

    • Deployment of ChinaChopper webshell variants in the /images/ directory for persistent web-based access.
    • Installation of the 'UpStyle' Python backdoor, establishing reverse TCP/HTTPS tunnels to C2 IPs (e.g., 45.130.229.107).
    • Post-exploitation includes running Mimikatz for credential harvesting and creating local administrative accounts.
    • Attackers utilize obfuscated files and process injection (MITRE T1027, T1055) to evade detection.
  • Threat Impact: Ransomware Campaigns

    • Over 2,000 unique PAN-OS appliances observed with active exploitation via global telemetry.
    • Linked to at least 12 confirmed ransomware deployments by groups including LockBit 3.0, Clop, and Black Basta.
    • High-value targets include Healthcare and Public Health (HHS), Financial Services, and Government sectors.
    • Estimated financial impact exceeds $150 million due to ransom demands and remediation costs.
  • Detection & Mitigation: Defensive Strategies

    • Apply critical PAN-OS hotfixes (10.2.3h1, 11.0.4h2, or 11.1.2h3) immediately to close the injection vector.
    • Enforce Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and implement strict network segmentation for VPN gateways.
    • Implement Sigma/IDS rules to detect shell metacharacters in GlobalProtect POST requests.
    • Hunt for UpStyle-specific indicators, including the Global\UpStyleMutex and suspicious outbound connections to known C2 IPs.
